Where it comes from

The stone is quarried in the limestone belt around Nimbahera, a town in Chittorgarh district in southern Rajasthan. The same geological belt is one of India's largest limestone regions — which is the source of a common confusion explained below. Dimensional grade vs cement-grade — the key distinction

The Nimbahera–Chittorgarh area contains two distinct types of limestone, and they are easy to confuse:

• Cement-feedstock grade — a high-volume industrial limestone consumed by the region's large cement plants. It is mined for its chemistry, not its appearance, and is not a building stone.
• Dimensional building-stone grade — a separate, finer-grained seam that can be sawn into slabs and tiles, polished, and carved. This is the architectural material exported for floors, façades and countertops.

Colour and appearance

Dimensional Nimbahera limestone ranges from pale cream to a warm beige, frequently with subtle fine veining or light shell flecking. The tone is even and neutral, which is why it is specified for hotel lobbies, retail interiors, residential flooring and building façades where a warm, calm stone is wanted. It takes a high polish but is equally popular honed or leather-finished for a contemporary matte look.
